How to search and request records
The catalogue describes what the Directorate holds. The records themselves are consulted in the research room in Peshawar.
Searching
| Type this | To find |
|---|---|
Waziristan allowances | Records containing both words, anywhere in the entry |
"civil disobedience" | The exact phrase, in that order |
gazette -punjab | Gazette entries that do not mention Punjab |
Wazir | Any word that contains it: Wazir, Waziristan, Wazirs |
Upper and lower case make no difference. Urdu titles can be searched in Urdu script.
Under More search options you can choose which field to look in, give a range of years, pick a list or sub-list, or search by file number, serial number, box or accession number. The panel on the left of the results shows how many matches fall in each list and decade. Select one to narrow the results.
Many old entries spell names in more than one way, such as Comissioner and Commissioner, or Brench and Branch. If a search finds too little, try a shorter part of the word.
Years
Years are searched as ranges. Searching 1930 to 1939 finds a file dated 1938-40, because part of it falls in that decade. Entries whose year was written in an unusual way, or not recorded, show their original wording and are left out of year searches. Use Only records without a year to list them.
Keeping your place
The page you are on, the number of records per page, and the sort order all stay in the address of the page. You can bookmark a search, share the link, or come back to it later. Your choice of records per page is remembered on this device.
Requesting a record
- Open the record and note the details on its label: the list, serial number, file number and box.
- Use Copy citation to keep all of these together.
- Bring or send the details to the research room of the Directorate of Archives & Libraries, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar. Staff use the box and serial number to fetch the record.
Publications marked Unavailable are away for binding, fumigation or official use, and cannot be consulted until they return.
